930-021 - SUMMER LABORER (TPT)

Class Title: Summer Hire
Pay Rate: $8.00-$10.00 per hour
Department: Public Works
Bureau: Recycling and Solid Waste/Public Works
This summer hire position involves a wide variety of tasks related to trash, recycling and the cleanliness of the City; including but not limited to working at the yard waste site; performing trash and litter cleanups; graffiti abatement; collecting tires, shopping carts, dead animals, TV's and other items as directed. May work with litter receptacle crews to empty and maintain. Within general guidelines and procedures, exercises independent judgment with general direction and supervision. Saturday and some night work is required as part of the regular work schedule. Manual labor performed outdoors in all weather.
Works under the supervision of the Operations Manager.
Does not exercise supervision over other positions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
" Minimum age of 18 years old.
" Works various shifts at yard waste site as part of the regular schedule.
" Performs cleanups of litter, trash, illegal dumpsites and public nuisance properties.
" Picks up dead animals, tires, trash and recyclables.
" Performs graffiti removal.
" Drives City pick-up truck.
" Performs warehouse functions.
" May collect recyclables items as directed.
" Maintains accurate records of all work activities.
" Performs other tasks relating to trash and recycling.
" Performs manual labor tasks outdoors in all weather.
" May work at the Recycling Drop-Off Center.
" Provide quality and effective customer service with courtesy and understanding to our customers, citizens and internal departments.
" Performs related and/or work as may be required.
Education and Experience:
(A) Completion of a standard high school course or GED.
(B) Ability to work independently.
(C) Valid Pennsylvania Class C driver's license.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
(A) Ability to work with minimal field supervision and make decisions based on conditions encountered in the field
(B) Ability to successfully complete in-service training program and an orientation period.
(C) Ability to communicate effectively.
(D) Ability to deal effectively and courteously with the public in all situations.
(E) Ability to exercise sound judgment.
(F) Ability to read and write.
(G) Ability to make basic arithmetic computations.
(H) Ability to understand and follow moderately complex oral and written instructions.
(I) Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors and other employees.
Must have a valid Pennsylvania Class C driver's license. Minimum age of 18 years old.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Ability to use broom, shovel, rake hammer, pliers, wrench, screwdriver, paint brush and rollers, floor jack, bailer, compacter, litter receptacle banding tool.
