JOB DESCRIPTION
Class Title: Maintenance Worker I (Part Time)
Grade Number: 6M (80%); $18.4260 per hour
Department: Public Works
Bureau: Recycling & Solid Waste
Union: SEIU

GENERAL PURPOSE

This part time position involves a wide variety of tasks related to trash, recycling and the cleanliness of the City; including but not limited to working at the yard waste sites; performing trash and litter cleanups; graffiti abatement; collecting tires, shopping carts, dead animals appliances and large metal items, and may assist in the collection of trash and recycling receptacles. Within general guidelines and procedures, exercises independent judgment with general direction and supervision. Saturday and some night work is required as part of the regular work schedule. Manual labor performed outdoors in all weather.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the supervision of the Operations Manager.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Does not exercise supervision over other positions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

" May work Saturdays at yard waste sites as part of the regular schedule.
" Performs graffiti removal.
" Drives City pickup truck, other vehicles and utilizes equipment.
" Collects recyclables appliances and large metal items set out for curbside collection.
" Picks up dead animals, tires, trash and recyclables.
" May assist in collection of trash and recycling receptacles.
" Performs warehouse functions.
" Educates citizens on proper recycling and trash procedures and litter prevention.
" Maintains accurate records of all work activities.
" Performs cleanups of litter, trash, illegal dumpsites and public nuisance properties.
" Performs tasks relating to trash and recycling.
" Performs manual labor tasks outdoors in all weather.
" Performs snow removal as needed.
" Works at the Recycling Drop Off Center.
" Provide quality and effective customer service with courtesy and understanding to our customers, citizens and internal departments.
" Performs related work as may be required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

(A) Completion of a standard high school course or GED.
(B) Some successful public contact experience.
(C) Proven ability to work independently.
(D) Valid Pennsylvania driver's license.
(E) Equivalent combination of related education and experience.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
(A) Knowledge of solid waste and recycling practices and principles.
(B) Ability to work with minimal field supervision and make decisions based on conditions encountered in the field
(C) Ability to successfully complete in-service training program and an orientation period.
(D) Ability to learn to assist in maintaining small engines and equipment.
(E) Ability to perform minor preventative maintenance to vehicles and equipment.
(F) Ability to speak clearly and intelligently.
(G) Ability to deal effectively and courteously with the public in all situations.
(H) Ability to exercise sound judgment.
(I) Ability to read and write at a high school level (minimum).
(J) Ability to make basic arithmetic computations.
(K) Ability to understand and follow moderately complex oral and written instructions.
(L) Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors and other employees.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Valid Pennsylvania driver's license.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Requires intensive daily use of broom, shovel, rake hammer, pliers, wrench, screwdriver, drill, compressor, generator, pressure washer, paint brush and rollers, floor jack, bailer, compacter, band tightener, snow plow.
