| JOB DESCRIPTION | City of Allentown Position Description
Class Title: Lifeguard Pay Range: $18.00 per hour Department: Parks & Recreation Bureau: Recreation
GENERAL PURPOSE
Responsible for ensuring the safety of facility patrons by preventing and responding to all emergencies; prevent drowning and other injuries from occurring at the aquatic facility.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the supervision of the Head Lifeguard, Pool Manager, Assistant Aquatics Manager, and Aquatics Manager and Recreation Program Specialist.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
" Patron surveillance to prevent drowning and other injuries from occurring at designated aquatic facility, including monitoring activities in and near the water through constant patron surveillance. " Recognize and respond quickly and effectively to all emergencies. " Prevent injuries by minimizing and/or eliminating hazardous situations or behaviors. " Enforce all aquatic facility policies, rules and regulations and educating patrons about them. " Administer first aid and CPR, including using an AED. " Inspect the facility on a daily schedule and report any unsafe conditions or equipment to the facility supervisor. " Complete records and reports as needed (pool water chemistry, incident reports, hour verifications, etc.). " Participate in regular in-service trainings. " Maintain facility cleanliness and perform maintenance as needed or requested. " Assist in identifying problems and act responsibly to make a decision. " Maintain appropriate knowledge and skills to help prevent and respond to emergencies " Demonstrate reliability by arriving at work on time, accepting assignments willingly, and responding to all incidents quickly and effectively " Demonstrate maturity and leadership. Be a good team member, act responsibly, take initiative and obey all facility rules and leading others through example " Maintain appropriate fitness level (swimming skills, strength and endurance) and complete weekly swimming requirements. " Assist in making responsible decisions on all aspects of the pool/spray park operation. " Make sure all equipment is out on the pool deck and operational prior to opening. " Scan all required zone of coverage areas. " Provide quality and effective customer service with courtesy and understanding to our customers, citizens and internal departments. " Performs related work as may be required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
A. Minimum 15 years of age B. Certified in CPR and first aid training, or the ability to pass the certification training for all of the following: " American Red Cross Lifeguarding " American Red Cross First Aid " American Red Cross CPR & AED for the Professional Rescuer " Additional certifications required by local or state laws C. Successful completion of pre-employment lifeguard knowledge and skills check
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
A. Knowledge of water rescue methods and techniques. B. Knowledge of swimming strokes and aquatic techniques. C. Knowledge of first aid and CPR principles and procedures. D. Skill in swimming, lifeguarding, first aid and CPR. E. Ability to pass swimming test as required. F. Ability to supervise the work of subordinate lifeguards and other pool personnel. G. Ability to exercise tact and judgment in maintaining order and discipline, and in enforcing pool regulations. H. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with associates, participants and the public. I. Ability to swim a minimum of 900 yards per week (3, 300 yard swims). J. Ability to work independently and as a team with other lifeguards, facility staff and management K. Effective decision-making skills and conflict-resolution skills
